Witchita Mtns Trip & Photos ~ October 5th 2002.
Wichita Mtns is one of my favorite spots, just north of Lawton Oklahoma and about a 3hr drive from Dallas/Fortworth. This was a day trip with the Fort Worth Audubon. It is a great place to visit, not just for the birds but also for the beautiful scenery and its quietness. This day trip was no exception, it was so peaceful out there, a beautiful early fall day. Every sound was crystal clear and the distant Elk were easy to hear. We had some nice views of Burrowing Owls, Wood Duck, Red-headed woodpeckers and Belted kingfishers among other common birds. The prairie dogs were very active also, enjoying the nice weather! No lifers on this trip and none were expected, just a nice day out!

Sunrise..
What a way to start the day! |

Prairie, lakes and mountains...
Several American Pipits were along the edge of this lake.

Prairie views...
With some great rocky hills for climbing, hikers are rewarded with views of the prairie beyond. This prairie holds wild herd of both Elk and Buffalo. |

Prairie Dogs
"I don't know Fred, is it safe out there?" !

Just a small group of us, we enjoyed the day and the company. Return to Bird Trips Copyright © 2023, All rights reserved.
