Jacana Chase, Rio Grand Valley ~ 9/9/06

On a second run down to the Valley to chase the Jacana at Estero Llano Grande State Park, we finally saw the bird! Unfortunately the previous time we went was the day the Jacana decided to leave for a week or so, but he returned to the same spot a few days before our return trip. This time at least it only took 5 minutes to see it!
We birded the Valley for the weekend, stopping off at Frontera, Sable Palm, Boca Chica and Laguna Atascosa. We searched for Yellow-green Vireo and thought we had it at one point but it turned out to be just a Warbling vireo, but very pretty all the same! We had LOTS of rain over the weekend but it didn't prevent us from birding. We had a total of 11 warbler species for the 2 days -
Yellow-breasted Chat, Ovenbird, Blue-winged, Black and White, Northern Parula, Yellow, Canada, & Mourning (all at Frontera) and Hooded, Wilsons & Northern Waterthrush (Sable Palm). Approximately 131 species total for the weekend.

Jacana wings
I just about caught the colouring under his wings in this photo as he stretched his wings.

Due to the bird not being too close to us at the time was able to get just a handful of decent photos. He was a beautiful bird and his back looked just like velvet!
One more...
He was worth the 9hr drive a second time to see him!
